- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup cup milk
- 1 tbsp tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tbsp tsp ground cinnamon
- A pinch of salt
- 4 slices of sourdough bread
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter (or oil) for cooking
Whisk the egg mixture: In a bowl, whisk eggs until frothy. Add milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Mix until well combined.
Prep the sourdough bread: Slice the bread into 3/4 to 1-inch thick slices.
Heat the pan: Preheat your skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add butter or oil.
Dip and coat the bread: Quickly dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture and transfer to the hot pan.
Cook until golden: Cook each slice for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crispy.
Serve and enjoy: Top with syrup, fruit, or whipped cream as desired.
Pro Tips:
- Use Slightly Stale Bread: Stale sourdough holds the custard better without getting soggy. If you’re using fresh bread, let it dry out for a few minutes before dipping.
- Adjust Sweetness: You can control the sweetness by adding extra cinnamon or a dash of sugar to the egg mixture for a sweeter French toast.
- Perfect Temperature: Make sure your skillet is hot before adding the bread. This ensures the crispy, golden texture we all crave.
- Top Creatively: While maple syrup is a classic choice, try adding fresh berries, a dusting of powdered sugar, or a dollop of whipped cream for extra flavor and flair.
