Ingredients

Units Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80 to 90 percent lean) (Use 85% lean for flavor without excess grease.)
  • 1 large onion, sliced (Slice thin for quicker cooking.)
  • 1 large bell pepper, sliced (Green is classic, but any color works.)
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced (Essential for flavor.)
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil (or a mix) (Used for cooking the veggies.)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • to taste salt and black pepper (Layer seasoning for better flavor.)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (optional) (Adds a nice flavor.)
  • 8 ounces short pasta (Penne, rotini, or shells work well.)
  • 2.5 cups beef broth (More as needed.)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or half and half (optional) (For a creamier texture.)
  • to taste Provolone slices or shredded provolone (Classic cheesesteak cheese.)
  • to taste Pepper jack cheese (shredded or sliced) (For a little kick.)

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Heat butter or oil in a large skillet.
  2. Add onion and bell pepper with a pinch of salt. Cook for 5-7 minutes until softened.
  3. Push veggies to the side and add ground beef, breaking it up. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika. Cook until browned.
  4. Stir in garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce and stir to coat all ingredients.

Cooking the Pasta

  1. Pour in beef broth and bring mixture to a gentle simmer.
  2. Stir in dry pasta. Keep the skillet uncovered at first to allow simmering.
  3. Stir every couple of minutes to prevent sticking. If the pan looks dry, add a splash of broth or water.
  4. When the pasta is almost done, stir in cream for a creamier texture.

Adding the Cheese

  1. Once pasta is tender and there is still some liquid in the pan, lower heat and add provolone first.
  2. Follow with pepper jack cheese for extra creaminess and flavor.

Finishing Touch

  1. For a golden topping, add a few slices of provolone on top and sprinkle with shredded pepper jack. Broil for 1-3 minutes, watching carefully.

Notes

For storing leftovers, use an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Reheat gently with a splash of liquid for best results.
