Main Ingredients
- 3 medium onions, thinly sliced (Yellow onions are preferred for sweetness.)
- 2 tablespoons butter (Can use half butter and half olive oil.)
- 2 tablespoons flour (To thicken the gravy.)
- 2 cups beef broth (For the deepest flavor; chicken broth can be lighter.)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (For umami flavor.)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (Optional addition.)
- to taste salt and black pepper
- 1 splash cream (Optional for extra creaminess.)
Instructions
Preparation
- Slice your onions into thin slices for even cooking.
- Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and nicely browned (15-20 minutes).
- If using garlic, add it and cook for about 30 seconds.
- Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1-2 minutes until it looks a little pasty.
- Slowly pour in the broth while stirring continuously until it thickens.
- Add Worcestershire sauce and black pepper. Simmer for 3-5 minutes, stirring until it looks like gravy.
- Taste and adjust seasoning; add more Worcestershire sauce or black pepper if desired.
Notes
For a smoother gravy, you can blend it with an immersion blender before adding butter. Serve with mashed potatoes, roast meats, or as a part of comfort food dishes like meatloaf.
