Description
This one-pan cabbage and ground beef skillet is a hearty, simple weeknight meal that’s quick to prepare and perfect for those busy evenings.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb Ground beef (85 or 90 percent lean)
- 1/2 head Green cabbage (About half a medium head, more if you love cabbage)
- 1 Onion, chopped
- 2 cloves Garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp Tomato paste (optional) (Adds cozy depth)
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Black pepper
- 1 tsp Paprika or smoked paprika
- Red pepper flakes or hot sauce (optional) (Add for optional heat)
- 1 tbsp Olive oil (Only if your beef is very lean)
- 1 cup Broth or water (A small splash to help the cabbage soften)
Instructions
Preparation
- Prep the cabbage: Slice it into thin strips, preferably bite-size for easy eating.
- Brown the beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, add ground beef and cook until no longer pink, breaking it up as you go.
- Add onion and garlic: Stir in chopped onion and cook for a few minutes until softened, then add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Season it: Add salt, black pepper, paprika, and tomato paste if using. Stir well to coat the beef.
- Add cabbage: Add cabbage in handfuls if the skillet is crowded; it may seem like a lot but will shrink down quickly.
- Splash and cover: Add a small splash of broth or water, cover, and let steam for 5-7 minutes.
- Finish uncovered: Remove the lid and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes, stirring until cabbage is tender but not mushy.
- Taste and adjust: Taste and add more salt, pepper, or heat, and a squeeze of lemon if desired.
