Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all purpose flour (Spoon flour into the measuring cup for accurate measurement.)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda (Helps the cookies rise.)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (Enhances flavor.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (Optional; adds warmth to the flavor.)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened (Ensure butter is softened, not melted.)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (Adds moisture and chewiness.)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (For sweetness.)
  • 1 egg (Binds ingredients together.)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (Use good quality vanilla for better flavor.)

Mixins

  • 1 cup old fashioned rolled oats (Provides texture and chew.)
  • 1 cup dried figs chopped (Soaked if very dry for tenderness.)

Optional Add-Ins

  • 1/4 cup orange zest (For an additional flavor boost.)
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (Options like walnuts or pecans.)

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix the all purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon (if using).
  3. In a larger bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Stir in the dry ingredients until no streaks of flour remain.

Assembly and Baking

  1. Fold in the oats and drained, chopped figs until evenly distributed.
  2. Scoop dough into balls, about 1.5 tablespoons each, and space them out on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Slightly flatten the tops of the cookie dough balls.
  4. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, until edges are set and centers are slightly soft.
  5. Let cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 4-5 days. To keep them soft, add a small piece of bread to the container. For longer storage, freeze baked cookies or scoop and freeze cookie dough.
