Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Cookies

  • 24 cookies Sugar cookies, homemade or store bought

For the Royal Icing

  • 2 cups Powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp Meringue powder or equivalent egg whites
  • 3 tbsp Water
  • 1 tsp Vanilla or almond extract (optional)

For Decoration

  • 12 pieces Marshmallows, regular size for heads
  • 1 bottle Black gel food coloring or black icing
  • 0.5 cup Orange sprinkles, orange gel, or mini orange candies for noses
  • 1 cup Small candies for buttons (mini chocolate chips, confetti sprinkles, or tiny pearls)

Instructions

Prepare the Cookies

  1. If using store-bought dough, prepare according to package instructions; if homemade, roll out and cut into shapes.
  2. Bake cookies at 350°F (175°C) for 12-15 minutes or until golden.
  3. Let cookies cool completely on a wire rack.

Make the Royal Icing

  1. Combine powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water in a bowl.
  2. Mix until smooth and glossy, adding a touch of vanilla if desired.
  3. Cover with plastic wrap touching the surface to prevent crusting.

Create the Melted Icing Puddles

  1. Spoon a blob of royal icing onto each cooled cookie.
  2. Use the back of a spoon to create a puddle effect.

Decorate the Cookies

  1. While the icing is wet, attach a marshmallow for the snowman head.
  2. Add small candies for buttons and use black icing for eyes and mouth.
  3. For noses, add orange sprinkles or candies.

Let Set

  1. Allow cookies to set for at least 1-2 hours before handling, or overnight for best results.

Notes

For easier decorating, use piping bags with small round tips. These cookies are great for kids to help decorate, and variations can include using different candies for decoration.
