Instructions
Cupcake Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (or temperature indicated on cake mix box).
- Line a cupcake pan with paper liners.
- Mix the cake mix with the required eggs, oil, and water just until smooth.
- Portion the batter into the liners, filling each about two thirds full.
- Bake for 16 to 20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let them cool completely before frosting.
Frosting Preparation
- Beat softened cream cheese and butter together until fluffy and smooth.
- Add cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt, mixing well.
- Gradually add powdered sugar until thick and creamy. Adjust consistency with a splash of milk if needed.
Oreo Dirt Topping
- Crush Oreos in a zip-top bag using a rolling pin or pulse in a food processor, leaving a mix of fine crumbs and small chunks.
- For darker ‘dirt’, scrape out some cream filling before crushing.
Decoration
- Frost each cupcake with a generous swirl of chocolate frosting.
- Sprinkle crushed Oreos on top to create the dirt effect.
- Insert gummy worms into the frosting, with some sticking out to create a ‘crawling’ look.
Notes
Cool cupcakes completely before frosting. Use thick frosting to ensure the Oreo crumbs adhere well. Extra toppings can include candy eyeballs, Halloween sprinkles, and mini tombstone candies to enhance the spooky effect.
