Description

A cozy, easy-to-make Caramelized Pear Pie Filling that combines juicy pears with buttery caramel flavors, perfect for pies, pancakes, or desserts.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 6 to 7 medium medium pears, peeled, cored, sliced (about 6 cups) (Choose ripe but firm pears like Bosc or Anjou for best texture.)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons butter (Use unsalted butter for better control over saltiness.)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed (Adjust the amount for sweetness preference.)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (optional) (For a deeper caramel flavor.)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (Can be adjusted based on taste.)
  • Pinch salt (Enhances flavor of the caramel.)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (Brightens the flavor.)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (Optional, enhances sweetness.)
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch (or 1/4 cup tapioca starch) (Serves as a thickener.)
  • 1/2 cup water or apple juice (Liquid choice can affect flavor.)

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Peel, core, and slice the medium pears evenly. Avoid making them too thin.

Cooking

  1. In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the brown sugar and granulated sugar (if using). Let it bubble gently for 1 to 2 minutes until it looks glossy.
  3. Add the sliced pears, cinnamon, and salt. Stir well to coat. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pears start to soften.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch with water or apple juice until smooth. Pour this mixture into the pan and stir. Continue cooking for 2 to 4 minutes until the sauce thickens and becomes shiny.
  5. Turn off the heat and stir in the lemon juice and vanilla extract. Let it cool slightly before using in your pie crust.

Notes

If pears are underripe, place them in a paper bag for a day or two to ripen. Add a splash of bourbon at the end for a richer flavor (optional). Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
