Description

A sweet and savory Char Siu Chicken recipe that can be cooked in the oven, air fryer, or on the grill, perfect for a comforting meal that feels like takeout.

Ingredients

For the Marinade

  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken thighs (Stays juicy and tender)
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce (Heart of the recipe)
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce (Keeps it from getting too salty)
  • 2 tbsp honey or brown sugar (For caramelized sweetness)
  • 1 tsp Chinese five spice (Use sparingly for flavor)
  • 2 cloves garlic (Fresh preferred, but powder works too)
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or lime juice (Balance sweetness)
  • 1 tbsp oil (Helps the marinade coat the chicken)

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Mix your marinade ingredients in a bowl. Taste it; it should be sweet and savory.
  2. Add the chicken thighs and coat well. Use a bag or container with a lid to keep it neat.
  3. Marinate for at least 20 minutes. Preferably longer for better flavor.
  4. Take the chicken out of the fridge 15 minutes before cooking for even cooking.

Cooking

  1. For oven cooking, preheat to 425°F (220°C). Line a sheet pan with foil and place a rack on top.
  2. Arrange the chicken thighs with space between and bake for 18 to 25 minutes, then broil for 1 to 3 minutes.
  3. For air frying, preheat your air fryer and cook at 380°F (193°C) for about 10 to 14 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  4. For grilling, use medium heat and grill the thighs for about 5 to 7 minutes per side.

Finishing

  1. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing to keep it juicy.
  2. You can glaze with some unused marinade by simmering it until slightly thickened.

Notes

If marinating longer, overnight is best. Can be served in rice bowls, noodles, lettuce wraps, or with veggies. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
