A cozy, homemade apple pie baked in a sheet pan, perfect for feeding a crowd during the holidays.
Ingredients
For the crust
- 2 crusts 2 crusts worth, top and bottom (Store bought or homemade)
For the filling
- 10 to 12 medium apples Apples, peeled and thinly sliced (Mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp recommended)
- 1 cup Granulated sugar (Mix with brown sugar for deeper flavor)
- 1/4 cup Brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons Flour or cornstarch (For thickening the filling)
- 2 teaspoons Ground cinnamon (Essential for flavor)
- 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg (For added warmth)
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt (Enhances apple flavor)
- 1 tablespoon Lemon juice (Keeps filling bright)
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract (Optional but enhances flavor)
For egg wash
- 1 egg Egg + a splash of water or milk (For brushing the top)
Optional topping
- 1 tablespoon Coarse sugar (For sprinkle on top)
Instructions
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 375°F and grease or line the sheet pan with parchment paper.
- Roll out the first crust into a rectangle to fit the bottom of the pan and press it gently into the corners.
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples with granulated and brown sugar, flour/cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice, and vanilla. Let sit for 10 minutes.
Assembling the pie
- Spread the apple filling evenly in the crust.
- Roll out the second crust and place it over the apple filling. Trim excess dough and crimp or press edges to seal. Cut slits for steam.
Baking
- Brush the top crust with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
- Bake for 40 to 50 minutes until the top is golden brown and filling is bubbling.
Cooling
- Cool for at least 45 to 60 minutes before slicing to allow filling to set.
Notes
For a flaky crust, keep dough cool. You can store covered at room temperature for 1 day, then refrigerate for up to 4 days. This pie can be frozen for 2 to 3 months.
