Description
A delicious and easy Char Siu Chicken recipe that brings the taste of Chinese BBQ to your home with a sweet and savory marinade.
Ingredients
For the marinade
- 1/4 cup Hoisin sauce
- 1/4 cup Soy sauce (regular or low sodium)
- 1/4 cup Honey or brown sugar
- 2 cloves Garlic (fresh minced or paste)
- 1 tablespoon Ginger (fresh grated or powder) (Fresh is preferable, but powdered can be used in a pinch.)
- 2 tablespoons Rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
- 1 tablespoon Sesame oil (A little goes a long way.)
- 1 teaspoon Five spice powder (Optional but adds a classic Chinese BBQ flavor.)
- 1 drop Red food coloring (Optional, only for that classic look.)
For the chicken
- 2 pounds Boneless skinless chicken thighs (You can also use chicken breast or bone-in thighs.)
Instructions
Preparation
- Mix all marinade ingredients in a bowl. Taste and adjust as needed.
- Marinate the chicken for at least 30 minutes, preferably 4 to 12 hours.
Cooking
- Preheat your oven or prepare your grilling device.
- Lay the marinated chicken on a foil-lined baking tray or a rack.
- Cook the chicken until done, brushing with extra marinade halfway through.
- For a sticky finish, broil for a few minutes and watch closely to prevent burning.
Notes
Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing to help juices settle. Store leftovers in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days. To reheat, use a skillet on low with a splash of water to maintain moisture.
