These Garlic Butter Honey BBQ Chicken Tacos combine juicy chicken, a sticky sweet sauce, and a variety of toppings for a quick and delicious dinner option.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1.5 to 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs or chicken breast (Thighs are preferred for juiciness.)
  • 3/4 cup BBQ sauce (Use your favorite brand, smoky works great.)
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 to 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt, pepper, smoked paprika, chili powder (optional), onion powder (optional) (To season chicken.)
  • 1 lime (For squeezing at the end.)
  • Tortillas (corn or flour) (Your choice.)

Garlic Butter Honey BBQ Sauce Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons butter (Used as the base for the sauce.)
  • 3 to 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3/4 cup BBQ sauce
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons honey

Optional Toppings

  • Shredded cabbage, sliced red onion, crispy jalapenos (For crunch.)
  • Sour cream, ranch, lime yogurt sauce (For creaminess.)
  • Cilantro, diced tomatoes, avocado, extra lime (For freshness.)
  • Cotija, cheddar, pepper jack cheese (For cheesiness.)

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Pat chicken dry and season both sides with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. If desired, add a pinch of chili powder.
  2. Heat a skillet on medium-high with a small splash of oil.

Cooking Chicken

  1. Add chicken to the skillet and sear until browned, about 4 to 6 minutes per side depending on thickness.
  2. Lower the heat to medium, push chicken to one side, and add butter and garlic. Stir for about 30 seconds.
  3. Pour in BBQ sauce and honey, stir and let it bubble gently.
  4. Let chicken simmer in the sauce until cooked through, flipping a couple of times for coating.

Final Steps

  1. Rest chicken for a few minutes, then chop or shred it.
  2. Toss chicken back into the pan to coat with sauce.
  3. Squeeze fresh lime over the chicken right before serving.

Warming Tortillas

  1. Warm tortillas in a dry skillet for 20 to 30 seconds per side, over a gas flame, or in the microwave wrapped in a damp paper towel for 20 to 30 seconds.

Notes

Use thighs for juicy chicken; do not crank the heat after adding the sauce. Let the sauce reduce and rest the chicken before chopping for juiciness.
