Description

A cozy and easy dessert featuring a soft, jammy apple layer topped with a buttery crumb crust, perfect for using up soft apples.

Ingredients

For the apple filling

  • 6 pieces Granny Smith apples (For tang and structure)
  • 2 pieces Honeycrisp apples (For juicy sweetness)
  • 1 pieces Pink Lady apple (For a balanced bite)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tablespoon flour or cornstarch (To thicken the juices)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (Optional)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (Optional, for added flavor)

For the crumble topping

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold butter (Cut into pieces)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup oats (Optional for texture)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (Optional for added crunch)

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. Peel the apples if desired, or leave the skins on. Slice them uniformly for even cooking.
  3. In a bowl, mix the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, salt, thickener (flour or cornstarch), and vanilla. Spread this mixture in the prepared baking dish.

Crumble Topping

  1. In a separate bowl, mix flour, oats (if using), brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Add cold butter pieces and mix until the mixture forms chunky crumbs, keeping some pea-sized bits.

Assembly and Baking

  1. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture.
  2. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until the topping is golden and apple juices are bubbling.
  3. Let the crumble rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving to help thicken the filling.

Notes

Use cold butter for a crispy topping. Don’t overmix the crumble. Adjust baking time based on apple thickness.
