Instructions
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter an 8×8 inch baking dish.
- Peel the apples if desired, or leave the skins on. Slice them uniformly for even cooking.
- In a bowl, mix the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, salt, thickener (flour or cornstarch), and vanilla. Spread this mixture in the prepared baking dish.
Crumble Topping
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, oats (if using), brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
- Add cold butter pieces and mix until the mixture forms chunky crumbs, keeping some pea-sized bits.
Assembly and Baking
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until the topping is golden and apple juices are bubbling.
- Let the crumble rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving to help thicken the filling.
Notes
Use cold butter for a crispy topping. Don’t overmix the crumble. Adjust baking time based on apple thickness.
