Description

A quick and flavorful dish made with garlic, turmeric, and rice that takes just 30 minutes to prepare, making it perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 1 cup Basmati rice (or jasmine/long-grain) (Rinse the rice before cooking.)
  • 1 tablespoon Butter or olive oil (Use butter for a cozy flavor, or olive oil for a lighter option.)
  • 2 cloves Fresh minced garlic (You can substitute with garlic paste in a pinch.)
  • 1 teaspoon Ground turmeric (Start with a small amount if you’re new to it.)
  • 2 cups Chicken or vegetable broth (or water) (Using broth enhances flavor.)
  • to taste Salt and pepper (Essential for flavor.)
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice (Optional; adds brightness at the end.)

Instructions

Preparation

  1. Rinse the rice in a fine mesh strainer until the water looks less cloudy to help keep it fluffy.
  2. In a medium pot, heat 1 to 2 tablespoons of butter or olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and optional onion, stirring for about 30 to 60 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add turmeric, a pinch of salt, and a little pepper. Stir for 10 seconds to bloom the spices.
  4. Add the rinsed rice and stir for about 30 seconds to coat the grains.

Cooking

  1. Pour in the broth or water. Bring it to a gentle boil, then immediately reduce heat to low and cover.
  2. Simmer for 15 minutes for basmati or jasmine rice, or 18 minutes for long grain rice.
  3. Turn off the heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork. Add a squeeze of lemon if desired.

Notes

To make this recipe more vibrant, add frozen peas in the last 3 minutes of cooking, or stir in baby spinach at the end. For added protein, consider adding shredded rotisserie chicken or chickpeas. This rice pairs well with various dishes like roasted chicken, skillet shrimp, or creamy salads.
